At first glance, I wasn't sure what to make of this faux-sari design. But it seems like Malhotra was riffing several traditional styles and melding them into one design (with questionable success IMHO). What we've got here, is a lehenga/sari incorporating the Sri Lankan style of sari draping (Kandyan/Osaria) by adding a layer of material around the waist. I like his use of several different styles here, however, I would have liked to see more detail work. It seems a bit drab.
For those of you unfamiliar with Kandyan saris, here's a look at a traditional Sri Lankan drape.
Malaika was in classic form in a skin-tight number. Cut-outs in back and in front? Check. And check. The mock neck and long sleeves balance out the cut-outs. My only quibble? Lose the headband. A headband + ballerina bun? It's a tired look and doesn't complement the sizzle quotient of her gown.
