Asin's Birthday Extravaganza

A number of A-listers flocked to promote their forthcoming ventures - err I mean celebrate Asin's 28th birthday. First and foremost was 3/4 of the Bachchan clan. One of whom looked seriously unhappy about being dragged out of his home for the party.
Aishwaryashek look perfectly nice (minus Abhi's hair which desperately needs to be cut), albeit totally predictable. They could have photoshopped this duo in from any of a number of other appearances - he in a nondescript black suit, and she in a pastel (shocker!) Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla creation. I do love her nude peep toe platforms though. A nice change up from the usual strappy sandal.
Happily, Arpita made an appearance sans-leggings. Huzzah! While not exactly desipolitan-worthy, Ms. Khan does deserve a glass of something for her vastly improved appearance.
Best in Lace Overlay Sorry birthday girl, but this round belongs to Jackie. She managed to put together a look including a midrif-baring top, lace overlay, statement jewe…

Ahakzai Grand Opening

Alvira Khan had ample star power on hand to support her in the opening of her boutique. Barkeep, a round of desipolitans, please!

Best in Tricolor MAK is a little drab over all. The red lip alone isn't enough to rescue the limp locks and boring suit. Methinks it'd be better saved for an Independence Day celebration. On the other hand, Divya is absolutely smashing and elegant in this challenging color combo.

Best in Desi with Modern Twist Granted Alvira must have been busy with her grand opening and all, but you'd think at least MAK would've given sis-in-law a few pointers such as wear chudidaars with your kurtas unless your kurta is tunic length, in which case a pair of skinnies will do. Never, ever black leggings though. Save those for your Zumba class. Shruti handily wins this round. Spot (err stripe) on perfection!

Best in Sari Mini, Sangeeta, and Shaina NC all had solid entries, but I'm going to go with Maria. She enlivened a traditional weave with neon pops of co…

Filmi Forecast: "Dedh Ishqiya"

A period(ish) film? Starring La Dixit in a major role? A role likely to have ample dance interludes featuring La Dixit? I am intrigued! Mads will be essaying the role of Begum Para, a courtesan opposite Naseeruddin Shah's Khalujaan. Word has it that Pt. Birju Maharaj has choreographed a mujra/kathak item for La Dixit! The film is scheduled for worldwide release in January. Here's a first look at Begum Para.

Sephora Collection Supreme Cleansing Foam

This cleansing foam is all well and good as a makeup remover. Quite satisfactory. But the real reason I keep a bottle of this on my vanity at all times (and a spare in my medicine cabinet) is that this sucker is a gentle and effective eye makeup remover.
One pump + warm water removes all traces of eyeliner and mascara. Two pumps makes short work of your most stubborn waterproof mascara without any eyelash casualties. Let's face it. Losing lashes as you struggle to remove stubborn makeup is utterly counterproductive to heaping on the mascara in the first place. At $12/5 oz, it's a pretty good deal to boot. I only wish Sephora continued to sell the smaller travel size!

It's Greek To Me

Well not really. It's actually Suneet Verma, but one can't help but think there's something Grecian in Sonam's look at Pammi Singh's bash. I think it's in her draping of the sari (almost toga-like) and her choice of flat sandals. It's certainly one of her favorite styles (though I'm not sure I can say a style chameleon like Sonam has a fixed style per se). See here and here for a couple of instances. I love this look on her as it captures a certain ephemeral quality.

The Long and Short of It

Chalk up a pair of dazzling outings for Shilpa. She attended a Nach Baliye press conference in a floor length Rajat Tangri gown. La Shetty obviously does not follow the supa-cas creed as espoused by the likes of Sunny D. and Amrita. Once again dressed to the nines, La Shetty lent hubs her support at his book launch in a lux D&G LBD (woah. That's a lot of letters). Both dresses were a-mazing, but I prefer her styling at the Nach Baliye event. Not that I don't love those jewels, but she was a little too dripping-with-diamonds for that dress. I think she would have done better to leave the necklace in her jewel vault.

More from the "Singh Saab the Great" Audio Launch

It's Happy Hour somewhere, right? Let's have a little drinky drink, shall we?

Best in Teal No question here. Amrita all the way. She seems to be channeling her inner nerdy journo. It's cute. Is she in character? Anyway, Sonu is just ick. Per the Desipolitan Style Manual, those v-neck sweaters require a button-down, collared (preferably white) shirt to be worn under them. It is not optional, Sonu. It is mandatory. Got it?

Best in "We Dressed Up Because We Give a Damn" Hands down Johnny all the way! Anjali is a close second - those sparkly peep-toe pumps with matching pedi really liven up an otherwise boring LBD. And Urvashi is a distant third with that patchwork quilt of a gown. I'm curious why Amrita chose to follow in Sunny's footsteps rather than dress up like the rest of the cast. She did pull off the cas look about a million times better than Mr. Big Star, Sunny. Seriously, guys. Take a cue from Johnny (yeah, that's right) and Amrita. Trainers do not…

Shaheen Abbas for Gehna Jewelry Launch

The B-town ladies brought several striking looks from traditional to ultra-modern to this event. Neha embraced the cut-out midriff trend quite ably though her satchel was a bit too structured for my taste.
Wearing a floor length gown in a bold red color ensured that Shaheen made a dramatic entrance. And why not? She was the lady of the hour, after all.
And, then there was Madhoo ...
"Frumpy" would be an appropriate adjective don't you think?

x 2: Badness and More Badness

Kainaat showed us her commitment to badness at the Femina Showcase event. She had the same teased hair and another tucked-in sweater look. A little advice, K? Wear a dark cami under sheer, dark knits. Save the the nude cami for white or light colored tops.

AdWatch: Piggy Chops for GUESS

This girl is everywhere! With a major Bollywood film release in Krrrish 3, and nonstop PR appearances to promote the film, Piggy Chops must have a caffeine IV drip as she is equally busy on this side of the pond. First she generated buzz for signing with an American record label, she collaborated with and Pitbull releasing successful singles, she did a related bit of promo work for the NFL, and even provided the voice for the character of Ishani in the Planes movie. Now this last one is a big deal in my home. When you have two baby boys, one of whom adores the Cars and Planes franchises, and you can take them to a theater and point to an Indian main character that is not some laughable caricature or Indian but not portrayed by an Indian (I'm looking at you, Disney's 1994 live-action Jungle Book), it is a big freaking deal. But ... I digress. Piggy Chops is busy racking up yet another first! GUESS has recently announced PC as its latest Guess Girl, adding her to a lon…

UFD @ Trilogy Reopening

As it stands, I don't love the romper look outside the elementary school context. However, seeing as it's currently quite trendy, let's move along. Assuming you are too old for pig tails but want to embrace this trend, the only advice I have for you is please, for the love of God, make sure it is a well-fitting romper.
As you'll note with this Unidentified Fashion Disaster, there's not much worse than a too tight romper.  And we all know that camel toe is only acceptable on a certain 50-year-old high-kicker known as Sally O'Malley.

15th Annual Mumbai Film Festival

The Mumbai Film Festival typically draws out the artsy coffeehouse crowd. This year was certainly no exception. My fave indie chick, Konkona, was in attendance and did not fail to impress. Her creme silk sari was understated perfection topped off with her gorgeous, glossy, lightly curled locks.
Tisca was bright and bold - go on with your bad self, girl!
Swara Bhaskar balanced the trendiness of her palazzo pants by wearing them in a neutral color and keeping the rest of her look in line with the geek chic nature of the event. She doesn't look at all like she's trying excessively hard to be "on-trend".
And finally, we have Ms. Divya Dutta. I don't love the gold lamé vibe of her blouse paired with the high-lighter pink sari, but by her standards, she's knocked it out of the park!

x2: Vivek and Acid Washed Jeans

Snapped at the airport along with his Krrish 3 costars, Vivek showed us he just couldn't bear to part with his extreme-acid washed jeans, even for a publicity jaunt to Dubai. Unfortunate, really, as I was so hoping his wife would burn them during his absence.

"Unlike the Americans, we prefer not to get our bad news from CNN."

Bet you weren't expecting to spot M (err I mean, Dame Judi Dench) on these pages, now were you? Well apparently she has been quite the fan of Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla for several years. Most recently, she turned to the design duo for several of her red carpet looks whilst promoting her film Philomena. She chose a floor length piece embroidered with chikan work for the Venice Film Festival. She was spotted in a considerably more relaxed outfit at the photo call for Philomena at the BFI London Film Festival. And we'll round up with my personal favorite: the lux kali coat featuring resham embroidery that she wore to the film's Leicester Square premiere.

ITA Awards 2013

Yawn. Another day, another awards show in Tinseltown. I can't complain - they always provide lots of blogging fodder. Let's order up a round of desipolitans, shall we?

Best in Couple Mouli G was a strong contender and nearly outdid Jennifer W; however, Mazhar cost her the W with that furry jacket. Karan was cost a victory by that pink, fluffy confection donned by Ragini. What is she channeling? Indian Barbie? Gah. Finally, As if Sanyukta's monstrosity of a beach cover-up wasn't bad enough, she's got neon green bra straps on full display. Why? Oh why?

Best in Backless
Best in Mesh Panels
Best in White
Best in Mile-High Hair
Kainaat's attire is right alongside Sanyukta's in terms of rendering me near-speechless. It's a terrible outfit for anywhere, let alone an awards show. And please tell me that's not the rarely seen front-VPL. It's the only thing more egregious than a whale tail only because I do not understand how it is possible for chuddi-creep in…
