My Eyes!

Dear god. My eyes! The glare bouncing off of Kangana's horrendous fashion choices is really quite painful. First up, the lady goes into matching yellow overkill at the Once Upon a Time in Mumbai success party. Since she is very obviously not a traffic sign, one wonders why Ms. R saw fit to deck herself out in all that yucky yellow. Along with the oddly colored hair and in-your-face red lip, it's too much, I say! Next, she adopts a more muted approach to yellow at a No Problem promotional event. However the maroon lip is rather Morticia Addams-esque. I'm not sure you want to pay homage to the makeup choices of such a ghoulish character this far after Halloween! Photos: filmicafe.

YBTJ: Sister Showdown.

Shilpa's Diwali party was the venue for a sisterly showdown of sorts. Given that poor Amrita's own wedding events included a bit of sartorial one-upsmanship by sister Malaika, we know that a showdown is never far off when both sisters are under one roof! In this case, neither sister impressed so I regret that I cannot declare a clear winner here.

MAK looks sweet and pretty from the front, but the excessively skimpy choli (which MAK seized every opportunity to flaunt for eager photogs), was a buzz kill IMHO. Call me the Mayoress of Prudeville, but I do wish MAK would exhibit a bit of restraint every once in a while. Being cougarific 24/7 has got to be exhausting!
On the other hand, Amu's floor length velvet number reminds me of a certain drapery dress made famous by one Scarlett O'Hara. That mess of sequins and silver string is reminiscent of what you'd find on drapes, na? And the choice of emeralds on top of all that green velvet is just a waste of beautiful jewels! Maharani Chimnabai of Baroda once wisely advised her daughter Gayatri Devi to "never wear emeralds with a green sari ... they look so much better with pink." Truer words have never been spoken! Amu, rubies would have been a much better choice here! Photos: filmicafe.

Which of These Things Doesn't Belong?

Normally I am all about pairing pieces of Indian jewelry with western evening wear. I mean how else is a girl to get good mileage out of statement jewelry? However, this is not to say that the look is infallible or that it can't be worn improperly. As Deepika P. demonstrated at the Hello! magazine hall of fame event, a jaw-dropping jadau necklace actually looks totally out of place with a short, tent-like cocktail dress. The dress itself is totally and completely below average. C'mon DP. We know you can do better! To that, the pairing of such a beautiful kundan necklace is just wrong. This neklace would have looked infinitely better paired with the fluid drape of a long, grecian-inspired gown a la Sonam.

La Rai walked for Manish Malhotra at HDIL Couture Week, and she embodied the term "showstopper". The off-white lehnga is not too shabby (certainly it is a big step up from the last one), however La Rai with her flowing mane and smokey eye gave it the elusive oomph factor. Not too many women I can think of can lend such panache to a designer's creations! Whatsay?

I Mean Really.

Rawr. I guess I'm feeling extra catty today. But some things just need to be said! The Daily Mail report regarding Hollywood has-been Pam Anderson's debut on Sallu baba's Big Boss gave me pause. Add to that, the apparent paparazzi feeding frenzy generated by her arrival at Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport and the whole ruse was about as subtle as one could expect from a venture joining Shirtless Sallu and Baywatch Pam. After Denise Richards and Sly Stallone's totally random appearance in Kambakkht Ishq, I gotta ask: is Bollywood the place to go for C-list Hollywood celebs trying to pump some life back into their sputtering careers? I mean really. Photo: AP.

Public Service Announcement.

Pardon the interruption, all. I just felt this matter was of utmost importance and really deserved to be broadcast in the form of a PSA. One look at Parmeshwar Godrej at the Hello! magazine hall of fame event, and I shuddered for like sixty minutes uncontrably. Parmi, darling. Let me be frank. You are like 100 years old. Your girls clearly need support. Please, for the love of God. Buy a flippin' "support undergarment" of your choosing, and wear it! Also, I am going to hazard a guess and suggest that maybe, just maybe, you should stop paying visits to your neighborhood plastic surgeon. Seriously, I don't think even your aesthetically challenged money grubbing quack of a "doctor" could possibly pull the skin on your face any tighter. We're worried about you, Parmi. It's like all the face tightening has impeded your vision, and you are thus left unable to truly comprehend how terrible you look. Be a dear, and learn to love yourself without all the nips and tucks. As a representative of the seeing public, I implore you to give up the habit! Thank you. That is all. Photo: filmicafe.

Hit and Miss.

Dia stepped away from the pastels and blushes and went bold and dramatic at the Sahara India Sport Awards. I love the mandarin collar on her choli. We see these from time to time on kurtas but it is innovative and fun for a sari blouse. Now, believe it or not, Gul P. was attending the very same event as Dia though it would be hard to tell given how woefully underdressed she was for the event. Once again, Gul trots out a blouse with a very unflattering neckline for a person with broad shoulders. In addition to the too-cas jeans look and pffft of a blouse, I dislike the matchy-matchiness of the clutch and belt combo. The one positive with her look? The hair. It's sort of an edgier take on the pixie cut. I like it. Photos: getty.

All Hail the Future Queen of England!

I know this isn't standard desipolitan fare, however who can resist a little royal khaas baat? It looks like Prince Will has finally popped the question to Kate Middleton, and she, not surprisingly, has assented. The engagement ring is the same ring that Prince Charles had given to Princess Diana. Prince William has stated that he wished to honor his late mother by giving this ring to his fiancee. The ring is an oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds. Here's a good look at it. What do y'all think? Entering into any royal family, let alone the British royal family, is surely a high pressure situation with intense public scrutiny. We wish the young couple well! Photos: USA Today, ABC

Caption This.

I'm always thinking of you, dear readers. And on this not-yet-Friday, I thought you could perhaps use one of these to lift sagging spirits. Without further ado, here is a shot of La Rai at the National Film Awards ceremony. You know the drill, let's have your best captions!
Aishwarya reacts joyfully yet incredulously at the news of her husband's win: "Abhi actually won?! Looks like all those acting lessons are finally paying off!".

Copy Cat.

Priyanka Bose unfortunately took a page from Mallika's peep-show red carpet look book. If she had to copy someone's look, why on earth choose Ms. Sherawat's?! There are so many stylish celebs in B'town. Twinkle, Sonam, Karisma! Instead, the girl went and chose this one. Note to Priyanka, showing off a little skin is fine if that's your style, but elegance should always be maintained. Particularly whilst strolling the red carpet! Here, she's opted for a slit to-there plus an ill-fitting bustier top. She is quite literally oozing out of that top. I know they usually say less is more, but in this case, more is definitely more! Photo: getty.

Unidentified Fashion Disaster.

Yippee! We haven't had one of these in a while! Check out this UFD at Shilpa's party. Ok, I'm all about mixing Indian and western clothing, and I do also love the new flannel renaissance, however I don't see how these two trends should be combined together! I mean, to do so, would only result in one I-just-rolled-out-of-bed-and-don't know where I am-mess! I have no idea who this chick is, but she is indeed an UFD.Photo: filmicafe.

Seen and Boogied.

The Obamas found time in their whirlwind India trip to meet with young students and even do a little koli-style dancing. Mrs. O, as you'll see, is a quick study and picked up some moves right away. When the Prez finally got cajoled into hitting the dance floor, his moves were very reminiscent of old Indian uncle-style boogieing. Gotta love it!

Blast from the Past.

Normally, a very chic duo, something was greatly amiss with Hrithik and Sussi at Shilpa's party. While Suzanne was absolutely impeccable in her suit, Hrithik looked like he stumbled out of the pages of a Filmfare circa 1991. Seriously. The puffy, two-tone hair, the shlepy pant-shirt combo with inexplicable heavage, and those scuffed up black shoes. What is going on with him? He is so off his A-game that he's making wifey look bad! Photo: filmicafe.

Happy Diwali!

Happy Diwali, to all! Here's wishing you a year illuminated with happiness, good health, and with a little luck, a bit of prosperity too!

Bolly celebs are truly a blogger's dream as they treat any ol' party like a red carpet event and insist on parading around outside (even if it's just a pal's driveway), before going inside for their party. One among a flurry of celebs attending Shilpa Shetty's Diwali bash, was the one and only, Amisha P. Now if there is one thing we can count on with Amisha, it's that she will go out of her way - I am talking above and beyond - to make a sari look absolutely atrocious. Time and again, we can count on her to look completely inappropriate in a sari. And I gotta, say, that is pretty tough to accomplish given that the sari is so user friendly and universally flattering. Anywho, here she is looking awful in every sense of the word. Here's hoping that the good light of Deepavali will illuminate Amisha's path toward actual, proper sari blouses.

Out and About.

La Rai was spotted on a casual night out on the town. With her jam packed schedule, appearances outside of awards shows, film promotions and photo shoots are rare indeed! Now I do appreciate that she is giving a nod to western styles as many of us have implored her to do, however this look is a rarity of another kind for La Rai. It is a miss!Let's start with the jeggings. While they are all the rage, and we know La Rai can certainly wear 'em with aplomb (cupcakes be damned), I think this pair may have gotten damaged in the wash. They are of course intended to be tight however the puckering of the fabric on the thighs means they might be a little too tight. It's just unflattering. As for the top, I completely agree with her that to balance the fitted nature of the skinny jeggings, one should wear a looser top. However, this strange hybrid of dolman sleeves and kurti just fell flat IMHO. And the head-to-toe navy blue didn't help liven things up either. Photo: bollywood hungama.

All the Single Ladies.

More from the Alva-Oberoi shaadi - this time it's the ladies' turn. They fared markedly better than the gents. You know that's a true statement when even Divya D. wasn't horrendously dressed. Now, the bar is set awfully low for her, but at least she was fit- and event-appropriate this go around. That said, I'm not really loving her suit, but baby steps, I guess.Dia was her usual, effortlessly elegant self in pale pink. The orange clutch was certainly an interesting choice. Remember, it doesn't need to match, accessories need only "go together". Genelia and Prachi were lovely in your typical desi wedding guest attire with blinged out saris. Fortunately, both opted for easy-on-the-eyes colors. Tabu looked nice, but a tad boring. If she simply had to wear white, perhaps heavier embroidery or even a contrasting chudidaar/odhni combo would have made the outfit more wedding appropriate. Photos: getty.

What the Hair?!

Check out Sonu Nigam's 'do at the Asian Awards in London. I have no words. Well just this one word: hideous! Whatever possessed this guy to step out onstage with such hair? Dude, leave the ringlets for Shirley Temple. Photo: getty.

The Alva-Oberoi nuptials brought out this parade of unkempt greasiness: Fardeen, Ritesh and Jackie. It's a wedding and yet these jokers look like last call at the neighborhood pub. Around 4 a.m. Yuck. What I would suggest, is that each of them take a visit to the barber for a nice wash and cut. Fardeen, there is nothing worse than a dingy-looking creme colored suit at a formal event like a wedding. And Jackie, please lose that bandana. If you think it's hiding those frosted tips from public ridicule, it isn't. Go ahead and have that mid-life crisis the traditional way: buy a sports car or something! I really wish these guys would have taken a cue from Akki, who even though sans-fashion plate wifey, was quite charming at the reception. Photos: getty.

Shaadi Story.

Vivek Oberoi wed Priyanka Alva and celebrated with a reception at the ITC Grand Maratha. The couple looked quite opulent at their wedding ceremony as well as at the reception. I'm not really digging either outfit, although I do like the deep green/lavender color combo of Priyanka's reception lehnga. While I certainly wish the new couple a lifetime of happiness, I do feel compelled to make a snarky comment. Rather than making Page 6 headlines for the nuptials per se, poor Vivek still can't seem to shake his unofficial title of "La Rai's Ex" as all the chatter surrounding his wedding focused on whether or not he invited said Ex (he did), and whether or not she would attend (she didn't). My goss bureau reports that the biggest celebs in attendance were Akshay Kumar and Sushmita Sen. Anywho, congrats to the new couple. Here's hoping the shaadi will end public fixation on his past relationship! Photos: getty.

The Eyes Have It.

Sonam shows off a neat trick for making your eyes pop at a day event. Rather than OD'ing on colored eye shadows, she simply chose one color and applied it along her lower lash line. The rest of her makeup is sheer and neutral which leaves this colorful accent the center of attention. Photo: getty.
To achieve this look at home, simply use your small angled brush (i.e. MAC's 266) and smudge an eyeshadow such as MAC's Atlantic Blue along your lower lash line only! Remember, the key to this look is that the color is applied only along the lower lashes. I think this bright blue really complements dark brown eyes. Don't detract from this artfully placed splash of color by layering on other colors on your face such as overly bright blush or lipstick.

Channeling the Material Girl?

Is it homage or just a really lame knock-off. I'm gonna go with the latter. Mallika S. attended the Doha Film Festival wearing this monstrosity. Can't say I'm surprised given her usual red carpet attire. It's more of the same really. The lady loves those cut-outs. On another note, is it just me or has she been promoting Hisss for a really, really long time? I mean she keeps cropping up all around the world promoting her movie. Sorry, lady, but no amount of tireless self-promotion is going to make me want to see this film! Photo: reuters.

Positive Feedback!

The lovely folks over at the Kanjivaram Society saw fit to repost my recent post regarding La Rai and her beautiful kanjivaram silk sari on their site. You can check it out here. Thanks much to the Kanjivaram Society. I appreciate your feedback!

The Family That Poses Together, Stays Together.

The Bachchans turned on some group posing action once again at the 57th National Film Awards in New Delhi. Big B and AB Jr. were both award recipients at this event. It's great that the whole family showed up in support. I swear, Shweta Nanda was there too! Not that you'd know it from any of the photos. I love La Rai's kanjeevaram sari. As I've said before, La Rai would look amazing in a burlap sack. But, in a pure silk sari, she's just stunning! This particular sari has a temple border noted by the peaks you see. I love the color combination. Green and purple with gold zari and delicate gold jewelry - La Rai could be the brand ambassador for kanjeevaram. While her style factor is impossibly high, I do wish she'd visit her colorist and take her hair color up a couple of shades. Currently, the light brown washes her out in my opinion. However, her makeup is spot on in its simplicity. She's got her usual heavily defined eyes - kohl and mascara, baby! A neutral lip, and flawless skin. Photos: AP.
Well, here is one photo of Shweta as proof that she did in fact attend. Poor girl - maybe she's just camera-shy. Can't really blame her if she is, the Bachchan Machine is rather camera-crazy! Photo: desigal.

Navratri/Dusshera/Durga Puja Wrap Up.

Rani and Dia attended Durga Puja in lovely saris. Being Bengali, Rani really pulled out the stops with her choices. I believe she's (appropriately enough) wearing Sabyasachi, a fellow Bengali. I love both of these ladies for choosing very traditional looks for puja. Very rich and luxurious fabrics and accessories but not the least bit flashy. Although, Rani's navy blue number is rather reminiscent of a checked table cloth. But still, both look fab-u! Dia's capped sleeve blouse is sweet and Rani's white sari is a traffic stopper. Think Pink!

Ladies (and gents too!), October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the States. I don't know for sure, but I believe many other countries are also marking October as BCAM. If any of you know of goings on in the Desh and would like to share, please do write in! I know I don't need to tell you, but this is one helluva worthy cause! Actress and model, Lisa Ray, is a cancer survivor herself. Throughout her battle with cancer, she was very candid about the disease and its toll on her both physically and emotionally. As a survivor, she is a tireless crusader for breast cancer awareness and fundraising for a cure! She was absolutely radiant at a recent breast cancer awareness event in Mumbai - hence the hot pink. It's a pretty fantastic color at baseline, but as a symbol of the fight against breast cancer, we love it even more! We here at desipolitan wish Lisa well in her endeavours and certainly hope to see her return to films in the future. "Shabash" for all your efforts in this arena, Lisa! Remember to wear pink this month, everyone! Photos: getty.

Love the 'Tude!

La Rai provides a surprisingly candid interview in the October issue of Hi!. I suppose surprising is rather unfair. But it seems that La Rai's practiced even keel in interviews has resulted in an impression that she may be unwilling to divulge how she really feels or to speak her mind. Given her obvious good looks, she has often been plagued with the assumption that there's just not much more to her than her beauty. In this spread, she's been styled by Sabyasachi Mukherjee using accessories by Louis Vuitton. Check out the quote regarding her much-publicized appearances at Cannes. You tell 'em, Aishwarya!Still looking as lovely as the day she entered the biz, but now braced with a blunt, "tell it like it is" attitude, La Rai will be turning 37 in November. Per the article, "Sixteen years later, she does not work out with any regularity, panders to her sweet tooth and starts each day with a cupcake." A cupcake?! I love her for loving her cupcakes!!
Ask her where she gets these cupcakes from and without missing a beat she says, "They come from various places, they go to the wrong places! So for the junk I eat, I have been very fortunate. There has been some weight gain because metabolism is doing its time as well, but for now, bring on the cupcakes!"
Bring on the cupcakes, indeed!Photo: Hi! Blitz,

AdWatch: Mahindra.

Check out Bebo's latest ad for Mahindra scooters. Per the tagline, "she's got her eyes on it". However, in my opinion, Bebo's expression indicates that she wants to eat the scooter. Therefore, I humbly suggest that the tagline be revised to read "It's got power. It's got style. And it tastes good too!" Photo: bollywood lover
